Students Win at Science and Skills Canada Competitions

High school students from across the District showcased their knowledge and skills at recent regional and provincial competitions. Many earned medals and several qualified to compete at upcoming national competitions.

Science Fair Winners

Two students from the District have been chosen to compete at the national Canada-Wide Science Fair for their innovative projects that earned them a place as finalists from the BC and Yukon region. Congratulations to:

  • Moscrop Secondary student Nimish Jain 鈥 project: Highly Evolved Lip Learning mOdel (HELLO): A Novel Machine Learning Model for Accurate Lipreading
  • 新澳门六合彩开奖结果 North Secondary student Khafri Mau 鈥 project: The First Step to Growing Plants on Mars

They are among 56 students selected from across 12 regions to attend the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Edmonton from May 14-19.

Grade 11 新澳门六合彩开奖结果 Mountain Secondary student Andrew Sun earned a gold medal at the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair. He was also awarded a $2000 entrance scholarship to the University of British Columbia for capturing 鈥淏est Earth and Environmental聽Science Project.鈥

Skills Canada Provincial Winners

Career Education students in the District鈥檚 Programs of Choice did exceptionally well at the Skills Canada provincial competition, where they took on challenges designed to test the skills required in trades and technology careers. The following students earned medals:

  • Jayden De Guzman from 新澳门六合彩开奖结果 Mountain Secondary and Emily Ling from 新澳门六合彩开奖结果 South Secondary in the Graphics & Media Arts program captured a silver medal each in the 2D animation category
  • Sarah Taylor from 新澳门六合彩开奖结果 Central Secondary in the Professional Cook program took home a bronze medal in the culinary arts category
  • Connor De Vera-McGinn from Moscrop Secondary earned a gold medal and Ogie Segulja from Alpha Secondary in the Auto Collision & Refinishing program聽both secured silver medals in the automotive collision repair聽category
  • Benjamin Halko from 新澳门六合彩开奖结果 South Secondary 补苍诲听Tim Generalov from Byrne Creek Community School,聽both in the Cisco Networking Academy, earned gold and silver respectively in the IT network systems administration category

The gold medal winners qualify for the Skills Canada Nationals in Winnipeg, which will be held on May 25 and 26.
